Research insights: Art is truly democratic by nature. Disruptive. Digitalisation is vital and inevitable. Nature is the absolute master in regeneration. Communication is the key.
This ICP’24 research project aimed to enhance overall festival experience and, resulted in prototyping MyceliUX, a digital communication “swiss army knife”; an interconnected UX app designed to provide production teams and festival go-ers the possibility to instantly Create, Read, Update, Delete and Transfer relevant information.

We observed various similarities between fungi networks and human communication. The goal of the project is to welcome questions, research, and development in regards to communication; the largest chaos-inducing festival problem, while making use of the latest digital trends.
Using Future Studies research methodology, our quest touched upon sociology, latest festival trends, future-fit business models, regenerative methods, environmental concerns, existing technologies, intentional digitalisation, user experience, clean energy and transportation, app development and last, but definitely not least, the infinite wisdom of nature.
Following agile project management structures and expert interviews, we concluded that the digital world is vital and inevitable, and communication is the main risk in organisational structures. The latter can generate chaos and severely affect timelines, and ultimately the overall experience.
Oddly enough, our prototype concept came about during a break. We were exchanging ideas about connection and teamwork and came to a subject that received unanimous excitement: the fungi world.
Looking at the variety of research the entire class gathered, we viewed the articles and insights as a curated and relevant collection of interesting reads. However, regenerative strategies and sustainability are models entirely relying on communication, collaboration and common goals. From this perspective, various methodologies and procedures are under development worldwide, and we can only support dialogue and encourage a meeting place of imagination and reality.
While the digital part of our application is possible and we can provide costs and duration of the MVP (Minimum Viable Product), the question is: How can we disseminate interest for finding healthier pathways? How can we fine tune the idea so it can generate interest and adoption?
Simple, yet complete, the information architecture of the app is displayed via 2 types of accounts: production team and guest. Each designed based on relevance. Both display a menu of 4 categories: INFO, MAP, CHAT and WALLET.
INFO: Detailed program with timeline, well defined role cards, AI smart search option for staff directory
MAP: Real time positions of personnel, color coded departments, crowd density cluster to measure density of guest accounts in a specific area
CHAT: Direct contact to staff members on the MAP via vocal message, text, upload photos and videos
WALLET: Transfer tokens or rewards to guests directly
INFO: Festival program, Artist bios & synopsis, live updates & notifications, green transit routes
MAP: Location feature aka “find my”, points of interest map
CHAT: Direct dialog window, communicate emergency, connect with artists & community, give feedback to the production team
WALLET: Manage bookings & tickets, digital tokens
Mission: Using our strengths, expertise, and creativity to strategize and effectively plan a prototype able to expose and address festivals’ challenges.
